Overwatch Launches on Switch 2 Targeting 60fps — But Blizzard Had to Patch a Framerate Bug First
Overwatch — formerly known as Overwatch 2 before its rebranding in February 2026 — launched on Nintendo Switch 2 on April 14, 2026, with Blizzard promising a significant technical upgrade: 60fps in both handheld and docked modes, a marked improvement over the original Nintendo Switch version's performance ceiling. However, the launch build shipped with a bug that locked the game at 30fps — the same frame cap as the older Switch version — negating the marquee technical feature Blizzard had advertised. Nintendo Life was among the first to flag the issue, and Kotaku described the experience of docking and undocking the console while the bug was active as making them 'recoil with disgust,' noting the jarring framerate inconsistency.
Blizzard game director Aaron Keller publicly acknowledged the issue within days and committed to an expedited patch. By April 17, three days after launch, Blizzard had shipped a fix that restored the 60fps target in both play modes. A subsequent update briefly caused new performance instability before a follow-up patch resolved it to an acceptable state, according to GameSpot's coverage of the patch rollout. Despite the rocky start, Video Games Chronicle published side-by-side comparison footage showing clear visual improvements in the patched Switch 2 version over the original Switch release — better texture resolution, improved lighting, and higher-quality effects in team fight scenarios.
The Overwatch Switch 2 version is a free upgrade for existing players who already own the original Switch version or have an active Battle.net account with the game's free-to-play status. For new Switch 2 owners, the game is available at no cost through Blizzard's standard free-to-play model, which has driven the franchise past 50 million registered players globally as of early 2026. The Switch 2 launch represents the first time Overwatch has run at 60fps on a Nintendo platform, and despite the patchy start, the technical bar on Nintendo hardware has materially improved. Blizzard indicated that future seasonal content updates will be simultaneous across all platforms, with Switch 2 receiving parity patches going forward.
